According to the World Health Organisation, IPV refers to any sort of action against someone intimate that causes physical, psychological and sexual harm to the other member in the relationship (Wong & Mellor, 2014, p. 170). It can also be referred to as “domestic violence, family violence, spouse abuse, battering or violence against women" (Wong & Mellor, 2014, p. 170). Perpetrators are predominately male and usually show controlling traits towards their partner, leaving individuals who are subjected to the violence feeling fearful and unsafe

Types of Intimate Partner Violence
There are 4 main types of IPV which lead to a range of physical and mental concequences. Its important for all individuals to be aware of the types of IPV for some may not seem as forms of abuse.
